STEAMbot

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. This nonprofit organization hosts The STEAM Team Summer Academy and the STEAM Youth and Community Conference to underrepresented groups in Linda Vista.

The academy provides a week-long quality educational experience for middle and high school students through hands-on exploration. The conference is a free annual event hosted by University of San Diego to encourage those of all ages to witness the intersection between the arts and sciences through fun workshops and activities. I revitalized their logo and marketing materials.

Introduction

During the year of 2016 I was tasked with creating STEAM's new brand. The brand had to be consistent on all platforms as well as marketable to children. The outlines provided to me were a color palette and motifs (see below) and it was important for the overall tone to be gender neutral.

Research & Inspiration

Considering that our goal was to be family friendly and gender neutral I researched several kids shows that resembled robots even those that I remember as a child.

Conception of STEAMbot

I utilized Adobe Illustrator to compose this logo and utilized the colors from the color palette provided. (2016)

Marketing and Apparel 2016

Participants of the academy were gifted apparel on the final day so I designed this children's T-shirt below. Considering the conference is after the academy, we wanted to invite people around the community through 'save the date,' invitations that were mailed it around Linda Vista.  Each designed Adobe Photoshop.

Website 2017

This year, we wanted to outreach to more people and provide a one-stop shop for inquiries. I designed the website in Wix for the Youth and Community Conference to showcase the agenda for the day, background of presenters, and allow the participants to ask questions. It was important for me to collaborate with a translator so we could outreach to non-English speakers in the community.

Logo Update 2018

I felt STEAMbot needed a full body so, I designed their body in Adobe Photoshop.

Marketing 2018

I discussed and conceptualized these ideas remotely with Dr. Meyers. Below are the conference invitation with the agenda for the conference. It was important to include brainteasers to give participants a taste of what will be at the conference. There were more workshops this year so we made different paths and provided icons to distinguish their audience. I also designed an academy flyer including the images of past participants. (each designed in Adobe Photoshop)

Website 2020

I was the principal visual designer of the Community Quilt page for the Youth and Community Conference Wix website to showcase the work done in the STEAM TEAM academy. This conference was a teleconference due to the pandemic. I worked with another designer, Katie to build the other pages in a one-week turn around.

Key Takeaways

Designing for Dr. Dalrymple and Dr. Meyers made me comfortable working with ambiguity and applying brand consistency across platforms.
