PROTOTYPE

OUR GREEN PIPE DREAM/
MODULAR GARDEN SYSTEM (MGS)

Since Bayside does not have enough space in its garden to meet the demands of the many Linda Vista community members who want to grow or purchase fresh produce for themselves. Our team wanted to come up with a tangible engineered solution.

During our ideation stage we came up with the idea of unattached cylindrical grow beds placed on a rack which would allow for Bayside to grow vertically rather than the use of wide, space consuming conventional plant beds in order to maximize space. We made a prototype that consists of one grow bed on a single wooden rack that could potentially utilize an integrated irrigation system which can bee seen below.

THE PROTOTYPE

Affordances:

  • The garden bed (the cylindrical cardboard piece) on the top of the rack, affords being picked up due to its current light weight and it being unattached to the rack.

Signifiers:

  • The opening on the garden bed signifies that things can be put inside of it. With a gardener’s knowledge in the world of it being in a garden setting and plus knowledge in the head of gardening, the opening more specifically signifies an area for planting.

Conceptual Model

  • Plant produce in the garden bed opening

  • Move the bed to area needed such as the farmers market for selling produce

    • Or rotating plants

WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME

Our prototype will give the gardeners of Bayside the ability grow more vertically, rotate crops easily from the rack system, and allow for the modular beds to be carried to the farmer’s market right across the street.

As a result, the consumers at the farmer’s market could not only select from freshest produce straight from the ground (from the cylindrical bed) but purchase the ones already made from the beds already on the ground. Also, Karmin will not have to deny community members growing space because the prototype creates more allocated spaces strictly for the community.
